ABOUT THE ARTIST: MEET KERWIN
Kerwin Blackburn is an independent, self-taught British artist known for his expressive hand-drawn and hand-painted acrylic portrait paintings inspired by music and pop culture. His signature style combines a Jackson Pollock-inspired ‘action painting’ technique with a bold and colourful pop art aesthetic, resulting in energetic canvas paintings full of movement, vibrancy, and personality.
Since launching in late 2019, he has combined his natural flair for painting with his commercial business school background to grow By Kerwin into an international creative and lifestyle brand and online store.
Kerwin has exhibited his artwork in London, New York, and Tokyo, as well as in his hometown of Norwich and in Manchester, where he lives. Learn more about Kerwin’s story.
WHAT IS ‘ACTION’ PAINTING?
Action painting is a style of art where the physical process of painting becomes part of the final piece. Instead of focusing on realism using conventional brush painting, action painting involves dripping, pouring or splashing paint onto the surface; using movement and energy to create bold, layered, expressive artwork. Made famous by Jackson Pollock between 1947-1950, action painting is known for its spontaneity, freedom, and visual impact.
More contemporarily, action painting was popularised by The Stone Roses, including on their iconic 1989 debut album cover – which introduced Kerwin to this art form.
Kerwin’s signature style combines action painting with a bold and colourful pop art aesthetic, reminiscent of the likes of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.
